Waterfront Park runs a picturesque half-mile along the Cooper River, from an exuberant fountain at its north end (near the cruise ship terminal), to North Adgers Wharf at its southern border. There is much to recommend a stop in this small eight-acre space: a great path for running or strolling with expansive views of ships moving in and out of the harbor; a fountain topped with a pineapple sculpture that splashes water into a small wading pool where children are permitted to play; and, also welcome on hot Charleston afternoons, a tree-shaded promenade lined with benches for those in search of a sea breeze.

Waterfront Park and Pineapple Fountain
I don’t know how during my many trips to Charleston that I kept missing getting to see the Pineapple Fountain at Waterfront Park. This year however, we found it and spent a relaxing evening under the trees watching the sailboats bobbing on the waters and children playing around the fountain. Sunset began to cast it’s evening glow around the park, casting shadows on the lovely old homes across the street as jazz music from nearby lulled us to relax and just sit in the cool breeze drifting off the waters and under the trees. People walked their dogs, lovers held hands and others just sat under the shade as we breathed in the sea air and listened to the city as it began it’s evening promenade.
