Fans of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies can go behind the scenes to see how New Zealand was turned into Middle Earth. In the suburb of Miramar (look for the windswept “Wellywood” sign on the way from downtown), Weta Cave and Workshop takes fans through the creative process of filmmaking with videos, props and costumes. Just outside the city, Wellington Rover Tours follow the footsteps of hobbits to the Outer Shire and other filming locations. For visitors with less time to spare, Courtenay Place in downtown Wellington hosted the film premieres at the Embassy Theatre, presided over by Weta Workshop’s Tripod sculpture.
