Unlike the more touristy haka war dances that are performed in Rotorua, Omaka Marae in Marlborough offers travelers an authentic experience and insight into modern Maori life on the South Island. The beautifully carved meeting house—featuring carvings, tukutuku panels and a contemporary mural—is used by the local community and is open to visitors. Omaka Marae also serves incredible Maori cuisine and Maori wine (it’s in Marlborough, after all), so try to have a meal there!
