Nazareth and the surrounding area are rich in places that will be known to many travelers familiar with New Testament accounts of the early life of Jesus. Nazareth’s important religious sites include the Basilica of the Annunciation, a modern building constructed atop a Byzantine-era church, part of which can be seen beneath the basilica in a grotto where the Annunciation is said to have occurred. At the Sea of Galilee, visitors can walk along the shore where Jesus is said to have performed many miracles. Farther south, the site of his baptism is close to where the Jordan River meets the Dead Sea.
