A quick excursion by car (or a one-hour hike) takes you up Mont St.-Clair and its lookout for refreshing breezes and sweeping hilltop views over Sète’s canals, the sea and the enormous Thau Lagoon behind the city. The unassuming white Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette at the summit was once a fortress, while a soaring cross erected to aid fishermen sailing home is Sète’s modest version of Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue.
