One of Caye Caulker’s best beach bars is also its friendliest. Set right on the Split—a narrow channel dividing the island’s north and south portions—Caye Caulker’s most social corner invites tourists and locals to gather for a swim off an extended dock, or to enjoy a cocktail and music. Lazy Lizard’s recently upgraded look includes a variety of umbrella-covered wooden picnic tables, seating under palapas, and a new beach extension with steps leading into the shallow sea areas for easy entry. On the menu, you’ll find typical bar bites: burgers, fish tacos, and full meals like a lobster plate. The bar holds occasional full-moon parties, live music, family-fun days, and beach volleyball tournaments.

The. Hangout. Spot.

“Go slow” is the motto on Caye Caulker, a small laid back island off the coast of Belize, where there is little to do but relax, snorkel and dive. Many will hang out on the docks and in hammocks, but any traveler that passes through this island needs to make a stop at the Split...and by a stop, I mean a long stop. The Split is the location of the island’s beach, a small strip of sand built up with a seawall but quite adequate for some sunbathing and gathering. On the other side of Lazy Lizards, a 2 story bar where buckets of beer and rum drinks are sold, you’ll find an area of picnic tables built in the water protected by a seawall often littered with sunbathers. Music is always playing; people are always hanging out; and the ocean views are always amazing. It’s a great spot to relax for the day and have a few drinks. And, it is an amazing vantage point to watch the sunset. And, by the way, if you’re feeling a bit like a kid in a grown up’s body, try the lizard juice (or iguana juice?) pictured above, a fluorescent green sweet concoction, like a Caribbean version of the Long Island Iced Tea, meaning, “Use with caution.”

Drink Lizard Juice at Caye Caulker's Split

Spending a day relaxing and/or partying at Caye Caulker’s infamous “Split” is one of the most popular things to do if you are staying on one of Belize’s North Islands. Once at the Split, you’ll undoubtedly see someone with a bright green frozen drink. This is the Lazy Lizard Bar’s infamous “Lizard Juice” drink, popular with locals and travelers alike. While definitely refreshing, be warned as too many Lizard Juices will creep up on you at the end of the day!
