“We hope you adapt to our bohemian philosophy,” say the staff at Hotel La Semilla, by way of explanation when guests ask why rooms have no televisions (there is, however, Wi-Fi and AC). With distressed walls and furniture, the hotel has a shabby chic feel (or, as they describe it, “rough luxe”), and owners Alexis and Angie treat all guests as friends. Part of the room rate is earmarked as a donation to the Friends of Sian Ka’an, a conservation group dedicated to the preservation of the nearby Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

Bohemian Chic Boutique Hotel
Bohemian chic best describes the petite Hotel La Semilla, one of Playa del Carmen’s newest B&Bs. Opened in January 2014 with only nine rooms, this small, adult-only member of Design Hotels has already made its mark on the tourism trail. The emphasis here is on promoting the destination, while offering a comfortable “home-away-from-home” feel. Refreshments are offered throughout the day in the small, welcoming lobby. Infused water and complimentary beer are served by day; wine and candlelight appear when night falls
Peaceful Oasis in Playa del Carmen
This chic property is a peaceful oasis on a wonderful street just off the main drag. Alexis Scharer and team have created beautiful rooms with concrete floors and vintage furniture. The garden is serene and leads to a welcoming area where breakfast is served or a glass of wine can be found. One of Alexis’ focuses is to save the trees, which has created the ambiance of the garden. He told us about the neighborhood group of 38th Street, where the often meet to insure the beauty and vibe of their street stays in tack by preserving the trees. Soon Alexis will be opening Villa La Semilla on Soliman Bay in Tulum. It will be a private home for rent with staff.
