Built under Spanish rule in the mid-1500s to protect the island from invaders, Fortaleza San Felipe is Puerto Plata’s only remaining structure from that period. The fort was later used as a prison before eventually opening to the public as a museum in the 1960s. There are fabulous water vistas, of course, but the site’s standout attraction is the lighthouse: a 24-meter-tall (80-foot-tall) white-and-yellow structure constructed in a neoclassical style.
