Corinthia London

Whitehall Pl, Westminster, London SW1A 2BD, UK

Opened in 2011, this luxury hotel from the Malta-based Corinthia brand occupies a Victorian building (once home to the Ministry of Defense) in the heart of the city, not far from Trafalgar Square, The National Gallery, the London Eye, and the theater district. The overall vibe is one of a 21st-century grand hotel, with a series of elegant public spaces—some vast and high-ceilinged, others warm and cozy—unfolding along the ground floor. Find modern, British-accented fare and a decadent breakfast spread at The Northall restaurant; all-day dining and a recently reimagined afternoon tea service (complete with Champagne trolley) at The Crystal Moon Lounge; and, in good weather, al fresco drinks, bites, and cigars at the leafy Garden Lounge. In summer 2018, the Bassoon Bar re-launched as a 1920s-era, New Orleans-inspired hangout, complete with a creative cocktail and bubbly menu developed by award-winning bartender Marcis Dzelzainis and wine expert Michael Sager. Shortly after, the hotel also opened Kerridge’s Bar and Grill, the first London restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge.

Beyond its common spaces, the Corinthia is home to 283 residential-style rooms and suites, which include chic London and Garden suites (launched in 2018) and seven themed presidential suites, all crafted by David Collins Studio. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, Nespresso machines, high-tech media hubs, and marble bathrooms with rain showers, bathtubs with built-in TVs, heated floors, and ESPA products. Some of the higher-level suites even come with private outdoor spaces, butler service, and expansive views. Further relaxation can be found at the flagship ESPA Life by Corinthia Spa, one of the largest in the city with 17 treatment “pods,” a 24/7 gym, a nail studio, and a vast thermal floor with multiple pools, sauna and stream rooms, ice fountains, and sleep pods for extra serenity. To engage both visitors and locals, the hotel regularly offers unique programming and partnerships, including hosting in-residence experts—from neuroscientists to “futurist” trend forecasters—who lead talks and events throughout their stays.

Corinthia London appoints Neuroscientist in Residence

The Corinthia Hotel in London has become the first in the world to hire a Neuroscientist in Residence, with Dr. Tara Swart holding a year-long position to help guests boost their brain power. While this might seem a bit of an odd appointment on first glance, the move is an important one to help stressed businessmen and women to truly harness their cognitive functions and to improve their performance. The study of the brain, its impact on behavior and cognitive function, will be the key focus in this appointment. Dr. Swart, who is leadership coach and Senior Lecturer at MIT, will examine the mental resilience of each group to analyze how people cope with stress. At the end of the residency, there will be a special “Brain Power” study that will be conducted to look at insights and further findings. “As a neuroscientist, I am fascinated by how the human brain works, and as a leadership coach I advise people whose professions or lifestyle mean that mental resilience is essential and expected,” she says. The program is also for the staff: it will examine why mental resilience is a pre-requisite of working in a five-star hotel and how best to enhance their productivity, performance in and enjoyment of the workplace. The program will focus on neuro-nutrition, restorative sleep, hydration, mindfulness, exercise, whilst utilizing the facilities and expertise at Corinthia. As the healthcare landscape in the world starts to change, and as more visitors veer away from traditional doctor visits to hotel treatments, this appointment is an important and needed change in the way spas are evolving in general. A visit to Corinthia London has specially-designed food and drink offerings design to boost guests’ brain power: the Brain Power Residential Package costs from £618 (based on single occupancy) and includes an overnight stay in an Executive King room, a dinner and breakfast from the Brain Power Menu (with a diet including fat-rich avocado, milk, butter options, plenty of water, teas, a hangover tonic and no caffeine), an ESPA Mindful Massage with Yoga Nidra given in the guest room or spa and unlimited access to ESPA Life state-of- the-art facilities including the extensive Thermal Floor, Gym and unique Sleep Pods. A day Brain Power package costs £280 per person, and includes all of the above excluding the overnight stay option.
