The official name of Castle Hill is the Baranof Castle State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark, and both Tlingit and Russian forts once stood here. This rocky outcrop was also the spot where Alaska officially became part of the United States in 1867. A short walkway makes for an easy climb to the top of the 18-meter hill, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Sitka’s waterfront, along with Mount Edgecumbe rising in the distance.
