I’m a freelance magazine journalist currently based in New York City. My work has appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Point, VQR, The Atavist and Lapham’s Quarterly, among other publications.

I am grateful for support from the Overseas Press Club, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Heinrich Boll Stiftung, Round Earth Media, and the Fund for Investigative Journalism. My article “The Great Divide” was featured in Best American Travel Writing 2019. In 2020, I was the co-recipient of NYU’s Reporting Award, and am a two-time Livingston Award finalist in international reporting (2021) and national reporting (2022). My Atavist article “Invisible Kid” was a National Magazine Award finalist in Profile Writing in 2022.

I studied political philosophy at Carleton College, and got a M.A. in politics from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. I love railways, maps, and far-flung places.
